  Abstract

The system operator (SO) is in charge of maintaining the safe, secure and reliable operation of a power system. Therefore, the SO is responsible for the management of ancillary services. These services are provided by the generation, transmission and control equipment in order to support the transmission of electric power from the producer to the purchaser. A detailed Mixed Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) formulation for the provision of ancillary services - AGC, spinning, non-spinning and operating reserves- as well as energy in simultaneous auctions by integrated market systems are presented. This thesis provides clear definitions of lost opportunity cost for ancillary services in terms of the market clearing price (MCP) and evaluates the conditions under which opportunity costs are incurred to units that provide reserve requirements. Probabilistic method for a pool-based combined energy and reserve market, which considers both generators and interruptible loads (ILs), is proposed in this thesis. We try to minimize generation production cost together with the cost associated with expected energy not supplied (EENS) due to outages of generating units and failures of ILs to supply the reserve when required. A number of case studies are carried out to illustrate the impact of participant’s characteristics on the reserve cost allocation. Participation of demand side in energy and reserve markets enhances the efficiency of the market operation and makes the markets more competitive. Furthermore, by incorporating demand side in the market operation, system security and integrity will also be improved . The model has been applied to the hypothetical IEEE 24-bus test system with 26-generator and 32-generator system with constant loads and detailed simulation studies have been carried out to examine the performance of the proposed scheme. The problem is solved using DICOPT solver for MINLP problem under GAMS software.
